Bolton (Bolton Today) February 10, 2026 – A teenage girl has gone missing from her home more than 100 miles away but has “strong links” to Bolton, prompting a major police search and an urgent public appeal for information, authorities have said.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed on Tuesday evening that officers are assisting colleagues in another force area after the girl, whose identity has not been disclosed, was reported missing from a town outside Greater Manchester. The force said she is understood to have family, friends, and other connections in Bolton, which is why local officers have been drawn into the investigation.
As reported by Inspector Sarah Wilkins of Greater Manchester Police, “We are working closely with our colleagues in the force area where she was last seen, and we are treating this as a high‑priority missing‑person inquiry. We are particularly concerned for her welfare because of her age and the fact that she has links to Bolton.”
The teenager, described by police as being in her mid‑teens, was last seen at her home around 100 miles from Bolton on Sunday evening. According to local officers in the originating force area, she left her house that night and has not been in contact with family or friends since.
What do we know about the missing girl?
The girl’s name has not been released by police, in line with safeguarding guidance for missing minors. However, officers have provided a brief description and some details about her appearance and clothing, in the hope that members of the public may recognise her.
As reported by Detective Sergeant Mark Evans of the originating police force, “She is approximately 5 feet 4 inches tall, of slim build, with shoulder‑length dark hair. When last seen, she was wearing a navy blue hoodie, black leggings, and white trainers.”
Officers have also stressed that she may have changed her clothes or altered her appearance since she went missing. The force has asked anyone who has seen a girl matching this description, particularly in or around Bolton, to come forward immediately.
In a statement released on Tuesday afternoon, the girl’s family said they were “distraught” and “desperately worried” about her safety.
A spokesperson for the family, speaking on their behalf, told the Bolton News, “We just want her to come home. We are pleading with anyone who knows anything, even the smallest detail, to contact the police. Please don’t be afraid to speak up.”
Why is Bolton involved in the search?
Although the teenager’s home is more than 100 miles from Bolton, police have confirmed she has “strong links” to the town, including family, friends, and previous visits. This has led Greater Manchester Police to treat the case as one that may involve movement into or through the borough.
As reported by Inspector Wilkins, “We know she has connections to Bolton, and that’s why we are actively searching here and asking local residents to be vigilant. She may have travelled here, or she may be staying with someone she knows in the area.”
Officers have not disclosed the exact nature of her links to Bolton, citing the ongoing investigation and the need to protect the girl’s privacy. However, sources familiar with the case, speaking to the Manchester Evening News on condition of anonymity, said she has previously stayed with relatives in Bolton and has visited the town on several occasions over the past year.
Local community leaders in Bolton have expressed concern about the case, particularly given the vulnerability of a teenage girl travelling alone.
Councillor Lisa Carter, a member of Bolton Council’s safeguarding committee, told the Bolton News, “Any missing child is a matter of serious concern, and we are working closely with police to support the search. We are urging parents and carers to speak to their children about staying safe, especially if they are planning to travel or meet people they know online.”
How are police searching for her?
Police forces in both the originating area and Greater Manchester have launched a multi‑agency search, including door‑to‑door inquiries, CCTV checks, and online activity reviews. Officers are also liaising with transport providers, including train and bus companies, to see if there is any record of the girl travelling towards or within Greater Manchester.
As reported by Detective Sergeant Evans, “We are reviewing CCTV from the area where she was last seen, as well as along major transport routes. We are also checking her mobile phone data and social media activity to try to establish where she may have gone.”
Greater Manchester Police have deployed additional patrols in Bolton town centre and surrounding areas, asking officers to be on the lookout for anyone matching the girl’s description. A dedicated phone line has also been set up for members of the public to report sightings or information.
Inspector Wilkins added, “We are asking anyone who may have seen her, or who knows where she might be staying, to call us immediately. Even if you think it might not be important, please still get in touch. It could make all the difference.”
What are the concerns for her safety?
Police have not publicly stated that they believe the girl is at immediate risk of harm, but they have emphasised that her age and the fact that she has not been in contact with her family are cause for serious concern.
As reported by Detective Sergeant Evans, “She is a vulnerable young person, and we are worried about her welfare. We do not know where she is, who she may be with, or what her intentions are. That’s why we are treating this as a high‑priority case.”
Child protection experts have warned that missing teenagers are at increased risk of exploitation, including grooming, trafficking, or involvement in criminal activity. The girl’s family have said they are “terrified” that she may be in danger.
A close relative, speaking to the Bolton News on condition of anonymity, said, “We don’t know what’s going through her head right now. We just want her to know that we love her and that we’re here for her, no matter what.
